The idea for the book and support in its realisation came from the “Free and Democratic Bulgaria” foundation, represented by its founder, Dimitar Panitsa, and the executive director, Lenko Lenkov. The project became possible after the publication of Hristov’s book, “Kill the Wanderer” (2205) – Bulgarian and British state policies towards the Georgi Markov case. This led to the idea that an in-depth and objective study of a number of previously unread archives might facilitate the reconstruction of the real picture of important past events, still hidden in history.
The scope of the book tracing Zhivkov’s path to the highest peaks of the party and the state, as well as the effects of power upon his personal character and the collapse of his regime make it a valuable document on the communist era in Bulgaria.
